Bipasha Basu  is an Indian actress who appears in Hindi language films. She has also worked in Telugu, Bengali and Tamil language films. She is a former model who had a successful modeling career before venturing into films.

She debuted in a negative role in Ajnabee (2001) which earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. Her first commercial success was Raaz (2002). She was then noticed for her bold role in the erotic thriller film, Jism (2003).


She starred in top grossing films like 2005's biggest hit – No Entry, Phir Hera Pheri (2006), Dhoom 2 (2006) – her biggest commercial success till date and Race (2008). Her performances in Apharan (2005), Corporate (2006), Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008) and Lamhaa (2010) won her multiple nominations for several awards. She is frequented in the media as a "sex symbol".



She has been nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress and the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress twice each along with one nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Negative Role.


Roles apart, she is also renowned for her item songs like "Phoonk De" in No Smoking (2007), and "Beedi" and "Namak Ishq Ka" in Omkara (2006).Basu is slated to make her international film debut with the 2012 Australian film Singularity.

She is the second of three daughters to her parents, the elder being Bidisha, and the younger—Vijayeta.This Bollywood siren, believe it or not, never wanted to get into acting or modelling; studying medicine was her initial preference.

In Kolkata, while she was modelling and doing ramp shows, she met well-known model Mehr Jessia, who suggested that Bips take part in the Godrej Cinthol Supermodel contest. She eventually participated, and won the contest.After winning the Ford Godrej Cinthol contest, Basu was flown to New York by the Ford Company, where she started her full-fledged modelling career at the age of 17.

She even did the famous video Tu for Sonu Nigam's album, Kismat back in her early days, before she became an actress. After that, film offers kept flowing in and Bipasha made her film debut in Abbas Mastan's Ajnabee, with Akshay Kumar, Bobby Deol and Kareena Kapoor.

Bipasha’s penchant for the unconventional was apparent when she chose this movie (which had her playing the negative role) as her debut film. Her choice was justified as she eventually won the Filmfare Best Female Debut Award for her performance.In 2002, Basu starred in Vikram Bhatt's thriller Raaz. The film was a big commercial success.

She also made a guest appearance in Jay Sean's music video Stolen.In 2006, she won rave reviews for her performance in an item number during the song, Beedi in the film Omkara.

In 2008 Bipasha Basu starred in Race, her second collaboration with duo Abbas Mastan, co-starring Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Anil Kapoor and Katrina Kaif, the film performed well at the box office.

She also received rave reviews for her recent role in Bachna Ae Haseeno opposite Ranbir Kapoor.

Basu was in a relationship with her Raaz co-star Dino Morea since 1996 till they broke up in 2002.Soon afterwards during the filming of Jism, Basu began to date her co-star John Abraham, and they were in a relationship till early 2011 when the couple officially broke off.While together, the two were often referred to as a supercouple in the Indian media.

Basu has been in the limelight since her bold role in Jism. Her relationships with various co-stars have been featured in the gossip columns. She is known to be freely expressing herself in the public and jovial with her co-stars.

She has been described by the media as sultry, dusky Bengali beauty. She ranked 8 in Times 50 most desirable Women in 2011 and ranked 13 in 2012.UK magazine Eastern Eye named her the "Sexiest Woman in Asia" twice in 2005 and 2007.
