Ketrina Break up with her Boyfriend Ranbir kapoor

Ketrina Break up with her Boyfriend  Ranbir kapoor
Ketrina kaif is one of the few actresses who has been successful in making a name for herself and is among the most desirable leading ladies in Bollywood today. Like any other A-lister in the industry, Katrina also has a huge fan following and is considered as one of the most attractive actresses in the world.

From being a rank outsider to becoming a top Bollywood star, Katrina has indeed come a long way. While her Hindi diction and acting have been attacked by detractors, that has failed to have an effect on her career. In fact, she has always been the favourite of many big filmmakers. She has also shared screen with the top three Khans — Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan. But apart from her acting career, Katrina has always been the talk of the town for her personal life and her relationships with Salman Khan and, later, Ranbir Kapoor.

Her fans got a shock when the news of her break-up with her long-time boyfriend Ranbir broke on the internet earlier this year. This was the time when her movie Fitoor opposite Aditya Roy Kapur was about to release. The movie was a big commercial failure though. Many thought the break-up was a publicity stunt in order to grab sympathy and eyeballs. Rumours were also rife that Katrina and Ranbir were all set to tie the knot as the actor had moved in with her. However, the couple never accepted their relationship in public, neither did they deny it.

Post break-up with Ranbir, there has been a tremendous change in the Dhoom 3 actress. Katrina had always refrained from talking about her personal life. But after the break-up, things have changed drastically and she is seen partying with her Bollywood friends. She has started to look vibrant and happy (which we are loving, by the way) and is also seen attending special screenings and answering media’s questions. Katrina Kaif with director Kabir Khan

In fact, Katrina, who kept her distance from social media, joined Facebook on her 33rd birthday. It was whispered that Ranbir Kapoor’s refusal to be on social media led to Katrina staying away from the medium too. But now, she wanted to have a platform to have her say and also connect with her fans directly. She also conducted live chat sessions with her fans and answered all their queries. She will soon join Instagram and Twitter and will be handling the accounts on her own. So, no managers will act as interface between Katrina and her fans. Katrina Kaif’s Facebook live session

As soon as she landed on the social networking site, she got 3.5 million fans liked her Facebook page. Celebrities like Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, ex-boyfriend Salman Khan and others also welcomed her to the new world. She also celebrated her birthday at her gorgeous sea facing home with her best friends from the industry that included Karan Johar, Salman Khan’s sister Alvira Khan Agnihotri, Ayan Mukerji, Sultan director Ali Abbas Zafar, Kabir Khan and his wife Mini Mathur, Sidharth Malhotra and others. Katrina Kaif celebrates birthday with friends.
This is the Katrina we were waiting to see all this while. Now that she has opened up, we hope to see the carefree, relaxed Katrina and hear some quotable quotes. And the Katrina 2.0 we are talking about… her Facebook page is a proof.

Dishoom banned in Pakistan

Dishoom banned in Pakistan

John Abraham and Varun Dhawan-starrer Dishoom seems to be getting a good response in India with its high masala content. However, Pakistan is not happy with this full-on entertainer and has reportedly banned Dishoom.

The movie, which also stars Nargis Fakhri and Jacqueline Fernandez was released in India and worldwide on Friday (July 29). But as feared earlier, the film has been banned in Pakistan. Varun aka Junaid Ansari of Dishoom is really upset with this news. The actor took to Twitter to express the same saying: “Really upset that #Dishoom is banned in pakistan. I don’t think the film eventually shows any country in a bad light. It’s a wrong decision.”

Varun clarified that Dishoom has nothing against Pakistan but as per the country’s censor board, the film has shown Pakistan in a bad light. Dishoom deals with the kidnapping of an Indian cricketer just 36 hours before the final match between Pakistan and India. After the trailer released, eyebrows were raised on the other side of the border.

Earlier too the actor said, “I would like to clear this. There is no negative reference against Pakistan or any community.” He explained, “It is a very positive representation. In fact, what we are trying to show is that for certain people money is their religion. It’s not being an Indian, Pakistani, Hindu, Muslim or Christian. In the capitalistic world that we live in, money is the biggest driving force for most crimes.”

The banning of Dishoom in Pakistan will certainly be a loss for the film. Meanwhile, some other reports also state that Dishoom has got into censor troubles in some Gulf states.

Earlier in an interview with IndianExpress.com, Varun had expressed his desire to visit Pakistan one day. The actor in fact even had a brush with a Pakistan gentleman while shooting for Dishoom in the Middle East. A senior gent from Islamabad used to drive Varun around the Gulf city and the actor ended up forming a close bond with the man.

Varun also spent a lot of time discussing films with him. “Hindi films are loved in Pakistan and he told me that they watch all our movies and hoped that I would visit Pakistan someday. I told him that I would definitely like to come. Just recently our Prime Minister too visited Pakistan. So if things become better one day, I would love to go and visit Pakistan,” Varun then said. Really upset that #Dishoom is banned in pakistan. I don’t think the film eventually shows any country in a bad light. It’s a wrong decision

Even I am waiting for Munnabhai.” Recently, Arshad Warsi, whose character Circuit plays sidekick to Sanjay’s Munnabhai, had stated that the film has got delayed as Hirani’s biopic on Sanjay with Ranbir Kapoor in the lead is yet to go on floors despite initially being set to begin in June. Says Arshad Warsi Munnabhai 3 Delayed Due to Sanjay Dutt Biopic

Says Arshad Warsi Munnabhai 3 Delayed Due to Sanjay Dutt Biopic

Actor Arshad Warsi says the third instalment of Munna Bhai series is not getting started as the Rajkumar Hirani-directed biopic on Sanjay Duttis yet to go on floors.

"That (starting Munna Bhai 3 ) is an issue as Raju (Hirani) has to start the Sanjay Dutt biopic and it is getting pushed ahead," Arshad told PTI.

"Until and unless he (Hirani) decides he wants to do Munnabhai part three first and then the Sanjay Dutt biopic... if that happens then we will go first," he said.

Hirani approached Ranbir to play Sanjay's role in the biopic in November 2014 and the actor instantly gave his nod for the film.

The biopic was likely to go on floors this June. Now, the project is expected to go on floors next January and release during Christmas.

Since the Munna Bhai series is one of the most successful franchise, Arshad, 48, is quite excited about the third part.

"There is excitement for the film . There is no pressure. I do my job, I don't take stress. The more stress you take the more worse you get. You hear a script, you like it, you give your best," he said.

There were rumours that Arshad and Sanjay won't be seen in the third part of Munna Bhai series and younger actors will be playing the two iconic roles of Munnabhai and Circuit.

To this, Arshad said, "I don't think it will happen. I doubt."

Munna Bhai MBBS was a story of a goon named Munnabhai aka Murli Prasad Sharma (played by Dutt), who goes to a medical college, and his sidekick Circuit or Cirkeshwar (enacted by Arshad).

Its sequel Lage Raho Munnabhai showed Munna using the principles of Gandhian philosophy to bring about a change in the society.

Sanjay had earlier served sentence in connection with the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case. He came out of jail in February this year and Arshad had then met him.

"I met him after he was back home. We talked about lot of things which I can't say. We talked about what he went through (referring to jail term), his angst, on family, upcoming films...," he said.

Bollywood's Game of mobile & phone

Bollywood's Game of mobile & phone
The most thrilling, romantic, terrifying, musical and comical tring tring moments!

Its absence makes us restless. Its presence keeps our hands full.

It may be the most inanimate thing to look at but once it rings; it triggers all sorts of emotions in humans and bees (or so said Shah Rukh Khan in My Name is Khan). I am talking about the telephone, of course.

From wired to wireless, dial to touch, simple to smart, this beloved device has constantly evolved, tirelessly connected millions and bridged longest of distances through decades and across countries.

Aside from touching our reality, phone as a plot device is no less attractive.

Here then is a compilation of Hindi cinema's most thrilling, romantic, terrifying, musical and comical tring tring moments on silver screen.

Rajinikanth special air craft

Rajinikanth special air craft
AirAsia India
Away from his larger-than-life screen persona, Rajinikanth is grounded in reality.

The clamour is reaching a crescendo. Brands are rushing in to be seen alongside him. One of them, Malaysian airline AirAsia, has, in fact, created a history of sorts by deciding to fly his fans to the first day, first show of his forthcoming movie, Kabali, in a special aircraft that has his face painted in giant size on it.

In a hill village of Kerala, the Dalapathi Rajinikanth Welfare Association, a 25-year-old organisation started by his admirers, is planning to run 10 buses to Thrissur for the first day of the film's release. And, an enthusiast on a visit to India from the US intends to delay his return home till he has seen his film.

The frenzy defies logic. The critics remain flummoxed. 'Nowhere in (the) world, a man who looks like this can be (a) superstar. I wonder what he did to God that God did this to him,' recently tweeted filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma. Wonder as one may, but the fact is that there is no denying the 'Rajinikanth Phenomenon.'

Behind the hype and hullabaloo is a simple 65-year-old balding man who was born Shivaji Rao Gaekwad in Bengaluru, who lost his mother at the age of five, worked as a carpenter, a coolie and a bus conductor to make a living, and finally found a calling in Tamil cinema.

Fond of acting on stage, Rajinikanth was discovered by filmmaker Kailasam Balachander and groomed by S P Muthuraman who directed him in over 25 films.

Muthuraman describes him as a natural, unaffected person who has not changed from the man he was when he did his very first film, Apoorva Raagangal (1975), in which he played a supporting role. The lead role was played by Kamal Haasan.

Actor Arvind Swamy, who made his debut in Thalapathi (1991) starring Rajinikanth, recalls that so exhausted was he after the shoot that he went off to sleep in the very first room he found empty.

It was Rajinikanth's room. As the superstar's assistant hastened to wake him up, Rajinikanth stopped him. Swamy says when he woke up, he was shocked to find Rajinikanth sleeping on the floor.

His co-stars say that is the way he is. During shoot breaks, he will not rush back into his air-conditioned makeup room. Instead, he will stay on with his fellow artistes and often sleep on the sets, even on a bench, without a pillow, his eyes covered with a wet cloth.

"He is like a child in a candy shop. I have never seen an actor more excited than him on the sets," said Deepika Padukone, his co-star in Kochadaiyaan, in an earlier interview. The film was directed by Rajinikanth's younger daughter, Soundarya Rajinikanth Ashwin.

An extremely persistent man is how Ashwin describes her father. He didn't know a word of Tamil when he started and now look at him, she says.

Rejected in 5 star hotel Permission for release of "Kabali

Rejected in 5 star hotel Permission for release of "Kabali"

Authorities have declined permission to screen Rajinikanth's much hyped movie "Kabali" in five star hotels here. Citing rules, Bengaluru urban Deputy Commissioner V Shankar has rejected a distributor's application to screen the movie in the hotels, officials said. The Deputy Commissioner has rejected the application citing Karnataka Cinema (Regulation) Act and Karnataka Cinemas (Regulation) Rules under which films can be screened in theatres or multiplexes with required permission and not in hotels, the officials said. Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce and Karnataka State Exhibitors' Association had opposed the move to screen Kabali in five star hotels and even petitioned the Deputy Commissioner and Commercial Tax Department on the issue. KFCC had maintained that the five-star release move was illegal and the Central Board of Film Certification issues a certificate for release in theatres and not in any hotel. Distributors of the movie had planned to screen movies from Friday to Sunday in hotels like JW Marriott, Lalit Ashok, Royal Orchid and Crowne Plaza in the city. The tickets with price ranging from Rs 1,300 to 1,500 that included redeemable coupon were snapped up within no time but the plans, said to be a replication of the model in the West, have now been put paid to with the rejection. The money collected would be refunded, the hotels said. KSU RA RC BK

Dear Zindagi and Kahaani 2 to clash at the box office in November

Dear Zindagi and Kahaani 2 to clash at the box office in November

                                VS

Now it's not just Raees and Kaabil clashing, but Shah Rukh Khan's film with Alia Bhatt, Dear Zindagi and Vidya Balan's Kahaani 2 clashing as well.

Guess there is no respite for Shah Rukh Khan and his upcoming films. After the fracas surrounding the clash between Shah Rukh Khan's upcoming film Raees and Hrithik Roshan-starrer Kaabil on January 26 next year, now it seems like Shah Rukh's film with Alia Bhatt, Dear Zindagi has the same release date as that of Sujoy Ghosh's Kahaani 2.

On Tuesday (July 19), Shah Rukh Khan's production company Red Chilies Entertainment tweeted the release date of Dear Zindagi.
Dear Zindagi stars Alia Bhatt and Shah Rukh Khan and is directed by Gauri Shinde who earlier directed the 2012 film English Vinglish starring Sridevi.

However, Vidya Balan back in March tweeted a text-based teaser of Kahaani 2 which announced November 25 as the release date. The film is the sequel to the surprise blockbuster of 2012 Kahaani and while it is not known whether the original supporting cast is returning for the sequel or not, actor Arjun Rampal will be playing a meaty role in the film

Earlier, Shah Rukh Khan visited Hritihk Roshan's residence on the night of July 18. Accompanying him was producer Ritesh Sidhwani. Reportedly, Shah Rukh had a meeting with Rajesh Roshan that night to sort out the release date clash of Kaabil and Raees.

On Wednesday (July 20), Kaabil director Sanjay Gupta tweeted that the release date of his film remains unchanged. Thus, as of now, Kaabil and Raees, until any further announcement of release date changes, are both slated to release on July 26.

King Khan had already pushed the release date of Raees from Eid this year to 2017's Republic Day, so that his film did not clash with Salman Khan's Sultan. Now, with both his upcoming films Raees and Dear Zindagi slated to release alongside two big films, Shah Rukh Khan has a big battle ahead of him.

Great Grand Masti review

Great Grand Masti review
Director: Indra Kumar
Cast: Riteish Deshmukh, Aftab Shivdasani, Vivek Oberoi, Urvashi Rautela, Sanjay Mishra.
Rating: (0.5/5)

From the makers of the horrex Ragini MMS 2 and drug drama Udta Punjab, comes a horrcom (horror plus comedy) - Great Grand Masti. Only this one has next to no laughs. What Great Grand Masti does, knowingly or unknowingly, is subvert the sex comedy genre by having the horny husbands meet their match in an equally horny female ghost who wants to satisfy her own unmet carnal needs and thereby attain nirvana. It also pokes fun at Ekta Kapoor-dominated small screen's latest obsession with shape-shifting female leads (Naagin, Sasural Simar Ka). That's the extent of originality you'll see here. Rest is all brain freeze.

Amar (Riteish Deshmukh), Prem (Aftab Shivdasani) and Meet (Vivek Oberoi) are three friends whose marital life is devoid of sex thanks to the intrusion of unwanted relatives. Amar has a loud, demanding mother-in-law; Prem is distracted by his zealous sister-in-law and Meet is hosting a beefy brother-in-law who inexplicably is aroused whenever Meet tries to get in bed with his wife. The trio heads to Amar's mansion in a village to get laid because our wild guess is that Bangkok was already covered in Kya Kool Hain Hum 3 or Mastizaade. Here they encounter a haveli haunted by Ragini (Urvashi Rautela) who refuses to let them go. Did we mention that she is dressed like an apsara from a bygone era though supposedly she has waited for 50 odd years to get her hands on a man? Suddenly the sex-starved, lecherous men are running scared for their lives. As the men's friendship is tested so is the audiences' capacity to endure a crass film.

There's not much else to say other than that it has a host of gags revolving around a man's member (it can play the piano, no really), lewd and insensitive jokes (old women are so unattractive), barely-clad female characters (there's a maid called Shiney wearing the tiniest blouse seen on screen) and nonsensical songs. The many revolting faces that the heroes make doesn't make this an easier watch. Sanjay Mishra, who has made a habit of making us forget he was amazing in Ankhon Dekhi by playing buffoons, here is a fraud sage that delivers sermons by way of quoting Hindi film songs. Shreyas Talpade is a gigolo named Babu Rangeela who is turned into a chicken and then served as tandoori chicken. Our sympathies go to Usha Nadkarni who at one point has to contend with a sexual assault for supposed laughs. Simply put, no character walks out of GGM with a modicum of respect.

Tushar Hiranandani has writers Aakash Kaushik and Madhur Sharma as his partners in this abominable crime. When one character says, "Maine aap ke saath bahut bura kiya", you're ready to take it as an apology from the filmmakers.

Actress Saiyami Kher, who is making her big screen debut with Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Mirzya, says her next film with Mani Ratnam has been delayed and will perhaps only go on the floors by the end of this year.
Saiyami told IANS during an interaction here: “I was approached by Mani sir and I feel so blessed. It’s a dream to work with him. I got a call from his office saying that Mani sir wants to meet me. I went and he really liked the screen test and he said I am on, but unfortunately that film got delayed.

“It’s a bilingual Telugu and Tamil film. I am still keeping my fingers crossed that it starts soon. I am hoping that by end of this year, we will start shooting it,” she added.
The actress considers Mehra as her mentor.

“I owe my life to Rakeysh sir and there is no doubt about it because when I start talking about him, I go on and on. We all know how good a filmmaker, but he is also a wonderful human being.

“He is not somebody who is preachy, he doesn’t take himself seriously which is what makes him wonderful. He is so open to opinion from anyone. He is grounded and we have so much to learn from him,” she added.
Mirzya also marks the debut of Anil Kapoor’s son Harshvardhan.

It was then that her bodyguards got aggressive and started forcefully pushing away the media. One of the guards pushed away a cameraman so hard that he lost his balance and fell on Aishwarya’s mother who was standing behind. Parineeti on board to replace Sonakshi Sinha in 'Dabangg 3'

Parineeti on board to replace Sonakshi Sinha in 'Dabangg 3'

Few days ago Parineeti Chopra was the top most contender to be cast opposite Salman Khan in 'Dabangg 3' and that both Salman and Arbaaz Khan are extremely keen to have Parineeti on board to replace Sonakshi Sinha. However, there is a twist in the tale. Reportedly, Parineeti has denied being offered 'Dabangg 3' and was shocked to read the news. In her recent statement, Parineeti said that she got to know about the development when she read about it in the news and had no clue about it till then. The actress also added that her team was in a tizzy as they too were totally clueless about Parineeti being offered 'Dabangg 3' and frantically called her to check what was going on. The actress did confirm though that the film is in its scripting stage and if offered to play the lead opposite Salman, she would love to do it. Let's hope and pray that this deal materialises as after Anushka and Salman, people are waiting with bated breath to see the fresh pairing of Parineeti and Salman together on screen.

one of the co-producers of 'Raees' went and met Rakesh Roshan to discuss the possibility of shifting the release date of Hrithik Roshan starrer 'Kaabil'. Apparently, both films are set for a big box office clash on January 26, 2017. Onlookers say that SRK was visibly very happy while he walked out of Roshan Sr's house after the meeting and it was speculated that things probably worked out in his favour. However, the latest development in the story is that Rakesh Roshan has refused to shift the release date of 'Kaabil'. As per reports, the veteran filmmaker, who SRK shares fantastic rapport with, has maintained that the clash between his son's film and SRK's 'Raees' is still on. Now the only way they can assure or expect a win-win situation for both the films is that either they divide the theatres between them or SRK once again decides to postpone his film, which now looks very unlikely considering he already averted Raees' clash with 'Sultan' and shifted it to early next year. Keep watching this space for more updates.

Dharmendra's younger son Bobby Deol made a stunning debut with 'Barsaat' opposite Twinkle Khanna and impressed us with his acting skills in films like 'Gupt', 'Soldier' and 'Ajnabee'. However, his career has shown a downward graph ever since and one wonders what the actor is up to these days. Well, you will be surprised to know about his new found love. The actor has now taken to DJing. Yes, you read that right! Bobby will be seen as a Disk Jockey at a live musical event which is scheduled to happen on July 29 in Delhi. An invite to the said event has been doing the rounds that has Bobby Deol as its face on the poster which reads, "For the first time ever in Delhi. Bobby Deol spinning live and loud." Well, it's good to try your hands at something new once in a while Bobby. For those not in the know, the actor will make his comeback to movies in actor Shreyas Talpade's directorial film.

Ranveer Singh Bhavnani (born 6 July 1985) is an Indian film actor who appears in Hindi films. After completing a bachelor's degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, Singh returned to India to pursue a career in film. He made his acting debut in 2010 with a leading role in Yash Raj Films' romantic comedy Band Baaja Baaraat. The film emerged as a critical and commercial success, earning Singh a Filmfare Award in the Best Male Debut category.

Singh went on to star in the romantic drama Lootera (2013), Sanjay Leela Bhansali's tragic romance Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela(2013), his biggest commercial successes to that point, and in the action-drama Gunday (2014). In 2015, he starred in the ensemble comedy-drama Dil Dhadakne Do (2015), and portrayed Bajirao I in the historical romance Bajirao Mastani, one of the highest-grossing Bollywood films, for which he garnered critical acclaim and won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor.

Early life and background[edit]

Singh was born on 6 July 1985[1] into a Sindhi family to Anju and Jagjit Singh Bhavnani.[2][3][4] His grandparents, Sunder Singh Bhavnani and Chand Burke, moved to Mumbai from Karachi, Sindh, during the Partition of India.[5][6] He has an elder sister named Ritika Bhavnani.[1][7][8][9] Singh is the maternal cousin of actress Sonam Kapoor and producer Rhea Kapoor, daughters of actor Anil Kapoor and wife Sunita Kapoor (née Bhavnani).[10] Singh explains that he dropped his surname Bhavnani, since he felt that the name would have been "too long, too many syllables", thus downplaying his brand as a "saleable commodity".[11]

Singh always aspired to be an actor, participating in several school plays and debates.[12] Once when he had gone for a birthday party, his grandmother asked him to dance and entertain her.[13] Singh remembers that he suddenly jumped in the lawn and started dancing to the song "Chumma Chumma" from the 1991 Bollywood action film, Hum.[12] He felt the thrill of performing and was interested in acting and dancing.[12] However, after he joined H.R. College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai, Singh realised that getting a break in the film industry was not at all easy, as it was mostly people with a film background who got these opportunities. Feeling that the idea of acting was "too far-fetched", Singh focused on creative writing.[12] He went to the United States where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Indiana University.[8]

At university, he decided to take acting classes and took up theatre as his minor.[12] After completing his studies and returning to Mumbai in 2007, Singh worked for a few years in advertising as a copywriter, with agencies like O&M and J. Walter Thompson.[8][13] He then worked as an assistant director, but left it to pursue acting. He decided to send his portfolio to directors.[13] He would go for all kinds of auditions, but did not get any good opportunities, while only getting calls for minor roles: "Everything was so bleak. It was very frustrating. There were times I would think whether I was doing the right thing or not."[13]
Career[edit]

Early work (2008–11)[edit]

Singh at a promotional event forBand Baaja Baaraat in 2010

In January 2010, Singh was called for an audition by Shanoo Sharma, the head of the casting division for Yash Raj Films.[13] They informed him that it was for a lead role in their film titled Band Baaja Baaraat, a romantic comedy set in the world of wedding planning. Aditya Chopra, the vice president of the company, later saw the audition tapes on video and was impressed by Singh's acting, and decided that he fit the part of Bittoo Sharma, the hero of the film.[14] However, the director Maneesh Sharma needed some more convincing and he was called for a few more auditions over the next two weeks until they were completely convinced of his caliber.[8] After the two weeks of testing, Singh was confirmed for the role of Bittoo, with Anushka Sharma playing the female lead.[14]

Singh described the role of Bittoo Sharma as a typical Delhi boy.[8] To prepare for the role, he spent time with students at the Delhi University campus.[12] Prior to the release of the film, trade analysts were skeptical of the film's commercial potential, citing the middling response to Yash Raj Films' last few productions, the lack of a male star and the fact that the female lead, Anushka Sharma, was by then an "almost-forgotten" actress.[15] However, Band Baaja Baaraat went on to become a sleeper hit. Singh's portrayal of Bittoo was praised, with Anupama Chopra of NDTV writing that Singh was "pitch perfect in the role of the uncouth but good-hearted small town slacker who is a bit of a duffer when it comes to matters of the heart.[16] The film earned approximately ₹214 million (US$3.2 million) at the domestic box office.[17] At the 56th Filmfare Awards, Singh won the award for Best Male Debut.[18]

Following Band Baaja Baarat, Singh signed on for Ladies vs Ricky Bahl, a romantic comedy produced by Chopra and directed by Maneesh Sharma. He played a conman Ricky Bahl who cons girls for a living but finally meets his match. The film co-starred Anushka Sharma, Parineeti Chopra, Dipannita Sharma and Aditi Sharma.[19] According to Singh, the title character had various avatars in the film, including a chirpy, entertaining side and a sinister side.[7] Nikhat Kazmi of The Times of India wrote, "Ranveer is, well Ranveer: your average Joe kind of hero who looks convincing enough as Sunny, Deven, Iqbal, Ricky, his sundry avatars."[20] Commercially, Ladies vs Ricky Bahl earned ₹370 million(US$5.5 million) domestically.[21]
Success (2013–present)[edit]
Singh's next release was Lootera (2013), a period romance, written and directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, and co-starring Sonakshi Sinha.[22] An adaptation of O. Henry's short story The Last Leaf, Lootera was critically acclaimed.[23][24] Rajeev Masand of CNN-IBN wrote that Singh "brings a quiet sensitivity to Varun, and occasionally a smoldering intensity. Offering a finely internalized performance, he leaves a lasting impression."[25] However, Lootera performed poorly at the box office.[26]

Singh next starred opposite Deepika Padukone in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's adaptation of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, entitledGoliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, in which he played Ram, a Gujarati boy based on the character of Romeo.[27] Bhansali was impressed by Singh's performance in Band Baaja Baaraat and decided to cast him for the film.[28] Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela generated positive reviews from critics, as did Singh's performance.[29] Writing for India Today, Rohit Khilnani commented that "Singh has everything going for him here. His Bollywood hero entry scene lying down on a bike in the song 'Tattad Tattad' is outstanding. He learnt a new language to better his performance for the character Ram and it paid off. In his fourth film he has the presence of a star."[30] The film emerged as Singh's biggest commercial success,[31][32] with worldwide revenues of ₹2.02 billion (US$30 million).[33][34] For his portrayal, he received several recognitions, including a Best Actor nomination at Filmfare.[35]

In 2014, Singh starred as a Bengali criminal in Ali Abbas Zafar's Gunday, alongside Arjun Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Irrfan Khan.[36][37]David Chute of Variety praised Singh's screen presence and wrote that he "tucks the movie's center of interest under his arm and takes it with him — even though he has the could-be-thankless "good brother" role".[38] Also, Singh's chemistry with Kapoor was considered by critic Rohit Khilnani to the prime asset of the film.[39] Gunday proved to be Singh's biggest box office opener,[40] and eventually emerged a box-office success with a revenue of ₹1 billion (US$15 million) worldwide.[41] After a cameo appearance in Finding Fanny, Singh starred as a gangster in Shaad Ali's unsuccessful crime drama Kill Dil opposite Parineeti Chopra and Ali Zafar and received negative reviews.[42][43]

In Zoya Akhtar's ensemble comedy-drama Dil Dhadakne Do (2015), Singh starred with Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah and Priyanka Chopra as the younger sibling of a dysfunctional Punjabi family. Writing for Mumbai Mirror, critic Kunal Guha found Singh to be the "surprise element" of the film; he praised his "immaculate comic timing" and particularly noted on the subtelty of his performance.[44] The film further was an economic success, grossing ₹1.47 billion (US$22 million) worldwide within seventeen days of release.[45] Singh next reunited with Sanjay Leela Bhansali for the epic romance Bajirao Mastani (2015) opposite Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra. He portrayed Bajirao I, for which he shaved his head and locked himself up in a hotel room for 21 days.[46][47] Raja Sen in his review mentioned: "Ranveer Singh brings his character to life and does so with both machismo and grace, his Peshwa Bajirao slicing down soldiers like a lehnga-clad golfer wielding a too-sharp niblick.[48] The film was a box-office success and Singh won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor.[49][50]

As of July 2016, Singh has completed work on Aditya Chopra's romance Befikre in Paris, opposite Vaani Kapoor.[51] In addition, he has committed to star in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmavati, a film based on Rani Padmavati, along with Deepika Padukone and an untitled Rohit Shetty film, co-starring Tamannaah.[52]

Actor Emraan Hashmi and director Mohit Suri are her paternal cousins, while producer Mukesh Bhatt is her uncle.[11]Bhatt was educated at the Jamnabai Narsee School in Mumbai.[12]

Bhatt's first acting role was as a child artist in Sangharsh (1999), starring Akshay Kumar and Preity Zinta where she played the younger version of Zinta's character.[13] She had her first leading role in 2012 with Karan Johar's Student of the Year, alongside Sidharth Malhotraand Varun Dhawan.[14] She portrayed the role of Shanaya Singhania, a sophisticated teenage girl who is in a relationship with Dhawan's character but is attracted to the character played by Malhotra. Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama wrote of her performance, "Alia's role is reminiscent of Kareena Kapoor in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Stylish, classy, born with a silver spoon, she's someone who loves to flaunt not just her clothes and bags, but also her riches. Extremely photogenic, Alia makes a super-confident debut."[15] Anupama Chopraof Hindustan Times also mentioned the similarities with Kapoor's character, but noted that her performance was "without the killer attitude."[16] Student of the Year grossed₹960 million (US$14 million) at the box office.[17]
Rise to prominence (2014–15)
Bhatt established herself in Bollywood with her three film releases of 2014.[18][19] She played the protagonist of Imtiaz Ali's road film Highway opposite Randeep Hooda. Her portrayal of a lonely teenage girl who develops stockholm syndrome after being abducted was acclaimed by the critics.[20] Rachit Gupta of Filmfare mentioned that "[a]t 20, it’s surprising how Alia has got so many deft nuances right. It’s as if the actor has grown with the character. She is truly one of the most promising new actors in Hindi films."[21] Sonia Chopra of Sify added that Bhatt is "[c]ompletely immersed" in her role, and that "Alia’s uninhibited and raw performance will have you emotionally invested in her character all through."[22] Though the film underperformed at the box office,[23] Bhatt won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress and also garnered a Best Actress nomination at the ceremony.[24][25]

In Karan Johar and Sajid Nadiadwala's joint production 2 States, Bhatt starred opposite Arjun Kapoor. An adaptation of Chetan Bhagat's novel of the same name, it narrates the story of two IIM Ahmedabad students who encounter trouble in convincing their parents to approve of their relationship. For her role as Ananya Swaminatham, a headstrong Tamil girl, she learnt the language.[26] Critics were appreciative of her performance with Rediff.com publishing that Bhatt "really grows into the character and makes you believe that she's a career-oriented IIM-A grad."[27] Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express added that Bhatt was a "surprise" and was "easy and fresh and natural."[28] The film emerged as a top-grossing production, earning over ₹1.7 billion (US$25 million) worldwide.[17]

Bhatt's final film role in 2014 was as Kavya Pratap Singh, a Punjabi girl who engages in a romantic affair with a stranger a few days prior to her wedding, in the romantic comedy Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. Co-starring Varun Dhawan and Siddharth Shukla, the film was described as a tribute to Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) by Johar, who served as producer.[29] Writing for India Today, Rohit Khilnani thought that Bhatt had pitched in "one of her best performances so far", though Nandini Ramnath of Mint found her performance to be lacking in subtlety, writing that she was "more comfortable acting out her feelings through dialogue and actions".[30][31] Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania proved to be her second consecutive release to earn over ₹1 billion (US$15 million).[17] Her accomplishments in 2014 led Box Office India to label her as the top Bollywood actress of the year.[32]
Also in 2014, Bhatt appeared in a short film on women's safety, entitled Going Home, from director Vikas Bahl.[33] She next reunited with Bahl to film the romantic comedy Shaandaar. Released in 2015, the film featured Shahid Kapoor and Bhatt as two insomniacs who fall in love during adestination wedding.[34] Kunal Guha of Mumbai Mirror criticised the film and wrote that Bhatt "socks life into her character but fails to pump any into this film".[35] Shaandaar earned little at the box office.[36]
2016 onward

In 2016, Bhatt played the supporting role of a lively young girl with a buried past in Kapoor & Sons, a drama about a dysfunctional family starring Sidharth Malhotra and Fawad Khan. The film proved to be a critical and commercial success.[37][38] Bhatt then took on the part of a poverty-stricken Bihari migrant in the Indian state of Punjab in Udta Punjab(2016), a crime drama about substance abuse from the director Abhishek Chaubey. The intense role marked a significant departure from the mostly light-hearted parts she had previously played, and in preparation, she watched documentaries on drug abuse and learned to speak a Bihari dialect.[39] The film, co-starring Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, and Diljit Dosanjh, generated controversy when the Central Board of Film Certification deemed that the film represented Punjab in a negative light and demanded extensive censorship before its theatrical release.[40] The Bombay High Court later cleared the film for exhibition with one scene cut.[41] Bhatt's performance in the film was critically acclaimed, with several commentators believing that it was her best performance to that point.[42] Raja Sen of Rediff.com wrote that Bhatt "commits to her accent and deals with the film's most unsavoury section, and is stunning during an incendiary speech that elevates the entire film to a whole other level."[43]

As of June 2016, Bhatt has four upcoming projects. She has completed filming for Gauri Shinde's drama Dear Zindagi, in which she plays the lead role opposite Shah Rukh Khan.[44][45] She is filming opposite Varun Dhawan for the romantic comedy Badrinath Ki Dulhania, which will serve as the second installment of a franchise that began with Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania.[46] In addition, she has committed to star with Ranbir Kapoor in Ayan Mukerji's untitled fantasy film about a man with superpowers,[47] and to Mohit Suri's romantic drama Aashiqui 3 with Sidharth Malhotra.[48]
